2008 Olympic Trials at Hayward Field
From June 27th through July 6th of 2008, America's most elite track and field athletes gathered at the University of Oregon's Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon. Their sole purpose was to compete for a coveted position as a member of Team USA for the 2008 Summer Games to be held in Beijing. Track Town, USA once again hosted the most important pre-Olympic event in the country. Hundreds of thousands of visitors flocked to the Eugene-Springfield area to witness the event.
Lodging was in high demand as the area's hotels and motels were booked up far in advance. This made early reservations critical, as Lane County's available lodging is limited, fans found rooms north of Eugene in Corvallis (47 mi.), Albany (45 mi.), Salem (66 mi.) and as far away as Woodburn (82 mi.), Wilsonville (93 mi.) and Portland (110 mi.). To the south visitors found lodging in Creswell, Cottage Grove (21 mi.), Roseburg (71 mi.), Rice Hill (47 mi.) and Grants Pass (138 mi.). The city of Florence (61 mi.), on the Oregon coast, was also a place to stay while attending the US Olympic Team Trials.
The University of Oregon opened some dormitory rooms for the public, but since those rooms were adjacent to Hayward Field, they filled up quickly, as did rooms in other hotels and motels within walking distance, such as the Best Western Greentree Inn, the Campus Inn, the Phoenix Inn, the Days Inn, and the Quality Inn. There are also several bed and breakfasts and boutique hotels near campus that very popular and provided rooms to a few lucky spectators.
